Lacrosse, water polo, swimming, Pilates and more and more strecthing. Keep those muscles limber.

To eat :pasta, fish, whole grains, fruit, veggies, very little cheese (it weighs you down) and water. Stay away from the liquor as much as possible it makes you bloat.

Some red wine is ok.

I can't give you a specific regimen, but in the 1970's a lot of NHL players were part of the professional lacrosse league. Yes, they played two pro sports - the games were similar enough to keep them in shape, and it was encouraged by most teams. Of course, salaries weren't what they are now, so a "summer job" was important to some players. I think teams would have a fit now if a player wanted to do that, because the danger of injury is there.

I know Andy Murray (Head Coach St. Louis Blues) runs a mini camp of sorts for a bunch of players at Shattuck-St. Mary's School in Faribault, MN through out the summer. So I am guessing that keeping on the ice is a good way to keep in shape and keep some tabs on what they are doing. Although the players are not from his team he still is pretty active with what they are doing and how they are doing it..

NHL players tend to spend the summer at the lake and sometimes receive free boats, so water-skiing/wake boarding is a good way for them to maintain fitness without much risk of injury. As a matter of fact, skiing is an perfect whole-body work out.

Pretty simple, I'd make sure they got their schedule from the trainers. Anyone showing up for camp overweight and out of shape would have their paycheques suspended until they were in shape. Just a matter of enforcing what is written in their contracts.

Have them talk to Chris Chelios! PERIOD! You have to have the best workout routine in the world to play hockey in todays NHL at age 46, and play it pretty damn well at that. He is a workout junkie. He has a stationary bike in the Red Wings SAUNA! Any questions?
