As with any geological research, the key is to go out into the field. Volcanologists face a lot of issues because active volcanoes can be dangerous things. There's the intense heat, unstable ground, lava flows, pyroclastics, and dangerous gasses.

Volcanoes erupt as a result of molten rock rising up through the crust due to either convergent (subducting plates) or divergent plates or as a result of a tectonic plate moving across a mantle plume, aka a "hot spot".
