I've actually seen "Birth of a Nation," and while I don't agree with the director's point of view, it is a monumental film for its day. Three hours long, and silent, it covers the American Civil War from the point of view of the South, and makes heroes out of the KKK. Like I said, I don't agree with its racist views, but it's a great film.
The only other film I immediately recognize is "Gone With the Wind," which is, of course, and all-time great film.

All of them are good but you are looking for extra credit in a history class you are young. You want something that is quite simple to follow has great action and an open story. My pics would than be Glory, brilliant easy to follow and profound, lots of great writing material. The other would be Far and Away as it is a decent flick and easy with a lot of area to write about, I like this one.

Gone With the Wind
Those are my favorites on the list, but "Black Robe" IS a good film, very bleak and quite violent. I also have to commend "Last of the Mohicans"~the Daniel Day-Lewis version especially. Many people list "Glory" as one of their favorite films.

I only saw one of those movies, which was Gone With the Wind. I was very turned off by the melodrama and the unrealistic interactions by the characters.
Good luck with the other movies.

Haven't seen all of those, but most of them. I'd suggest Glory and Show Boat. My preference is the 1951 version, but the 1936 one has Hattie McDaniel and Paul Robeson, so it's good too.

I'd definitely fall asleep through any & all of those! I'd pick Gone With The Wind for sure, and go on iMDB.com to read the synopsis' of the others to see which one sounds more interesting to you.
