A conversion disorder is severe psychological trauma manifesting as a physical symptom - what used to be called "hysterical" paralysis (or blindness, or mutism) are common examples.
A conversion symptom can be differentiated from an organic symptom because:
* it may disappear under clinical hypnosis;
* there may be "subconscious" giveaways - e.g. a "blind" person claims to see nothing, yet analysis of their gaze fixation shows that they track moving objects normally;
* the presentation is inconsistent with medical knowledge of how that physical symptom would normally present - as in "glove" or "stocking" anaesthesia, which is not consistent with the loss of feeling normally associated with nerve or spinal cord damage.
