I wish to purchase a professional art tool (an airbrush) from an American dealer, using Ebay. Will I get stung with any extra/hidden costs?

I have shipped books to Oz, and so far as I know, purchases on eBay do not incur any additional cost, other than that you are as far away as it is possible to get (lol). Actually, what I would do is troll eBay for buyers from Oz, and send them an eBay message to ask if they have ever had to pay extra. Or you can just ask eBay.

I've had people in the UK tell me they got socked with an import fee, but never anyone in Australia. Ask your postal office if they have these kinds of fees in place for incoming purchases. It could be that nothing is added on unless the item is valued at over a certain amount. In Europe it's $35 US dollars, go higher and they put a fee on it for the reciever to pay. In the UK it's $30.

You may get an unpleasant surprise when you see the postage fees. This can be up to any amount the seller wishes to make it. So the selling price may be quite low, but the postage double sometimes.
Also there's a box that may ask if you want insured mail - another hidden extra.
