He has just got it recently and it seems as though it literally "happened over night". His belly is very prominent and bloated. When you look at him front on, it's huge.

It sounds like your fish has the Malawi Bloat. This very prevelant in the African Rift Lake cichlids, especially those that have a primary veggie diet. I have included links which you may find helpful. Not much is known about this diease but some believe it it is some protozoa parasites. The last link listed has what the hobbyist has done to try and cure their fish

Look up Malawi Bloat,then correct your Rift Lake Cichlid's diet. Also check your water parameters. But, my guess would be diet. Very hard to cure,prepare to bid your fish farewell.

I heard that if it's only the stomach and and scales don't pop out all over, just there (if they do at all), then no it's not dropsy. However, he could be badly constipated. Supposedly it's best to feed them peas, and/or treat with epsom salt as laxatives.
