My Renault Laguna estate (N reg. 2.0 petrol) is regularly goes overheated while driving slowly or idle. The fan won't cut in even the coolant in the tank is boiling. I've noticed that the radiator hose is not "very" hot.
And the heater in the car only goes a little warm.

Could that be the thermostat?
I tried to locate the thermostat but failed. seems it's under the air filter housing... Do I need to remove it to get the thermostat?

Thanks!

BTW there are coolant coming back to the tank so I guess the water pump is fine.

Thanks Richie!

The radiator is not as hot as the boiling coolant tank... I assume it is the reason that the fan won't engage.

Anyone have any idea where the fuse and sensor of the radiator fan is? I want to check it just in case.

Thanks all you guys!

The oil level seems normal, That's why I think the head gasket is ok(Hopefully).

I will try to engage the fan by short cross the sensor. And maybe get the thermostat out to see if it's broken. Otherwise It will out of my ability to get repaired. Then I''ll just let the garage rip me off once more...

First off, your coolant is low. I know this because you've already said you blew a bunch of it out your overflow. Its probably so low that its not reaching your fan switch. I don't know if tn switch on your car is in the radiator or on the Head/ thermostat housing. Let it cool down. Fill the radiator or pressure bottle if it does not have a cap on the radiator. Don't put the cap back on. Start it up. If it instantly starts to blow back out you have a head gasket failure for sure.It should have a little coolant movement up and down until the thermostat starts to open. At this point, it may bubble over some as the air purges from the system, then it should suck down coolant as the thermostat opens and gets hot. If it blows out a lot and you don't have any heat inside and both radiator hoses are not warm, you have a problem. I don't know if the thermostat is in the upper or lower hose side non your car,but the hose that's cool while is warming up is the one that will have the thermostat on the engine side of that hose. If the system is full, and both hoses show circulation, and you have heat inside, but the fan doesn't come on before it overheats, than you have a fan or fan switch bad.

If coolant is circulating, as you state, then the thermostat is working. The problem is the fan is not coming on. This needs to be fixed first before any more guessing. NEVER replace any part till you know the problem. The fan problem could be a defective coolant sensor or a fan relay.

sounds like the thermostat since you say your heat isnt very warm and the heater hoses arent neither
