I was curious about this years ago. One night I sneaked into the bus yard and after all the bus drivers had left I quietly sneaked among the buses. I peeked into the first one I came to and couldn't believe what I saw. I went to another and it was the same thing. I checked about four or five more and all the same. There on the seat way in the back was an undocumented alien doing what the americans wouldn't do----locking buses at night. And that is the secret

This is a great question... and a closely guarded secret.... amongst us old bus drivers anyhow.... but what the heck... you won't tell, right???
If the door closes with a lever mounted on the center of the dashboard, if you push the door shut quickly, it will cause the handle to over-center and latch closed. Depending on the type of bus or coach, depends on how you get it open... herein lies the trick...
If it's a school bus, climb in the rear emergency exit and open the door.... if it's a road coach (like Greyhound), look on the nose of the bus and you will see a button about and inch and a half in diameter... with a hole drilled in the shaft... just below the head of the button. It may even have a lock in it... (thru the hole).... Remove the lock and press the button. It pushes the handle on the dashboard backward far enough so the the door is free to open. Walk around to the door and pull it open by hand.
Some of the newer coaches on the road are air operated and there is a button under a small door on the side of the coach that operates the door from the outside.
The list could go on and on, but I hear the authorities coming and I must exit before they find out I have told you highly classified secrets....
Wish me luck with my escape....

Asked and answered once or twice already.
Got a good search engine?
How does a bus driver close the door after they leave Showing 1-10 of 312,300
I could tell you it is magic, but the real answer is there is a switch, usually key operated, that closes and locks the door from the outside.

toward the back of the bus on the outside, there's a small panel that you have to open with key, once open the panel, there's a switch for opening/closing the door.

They usually just push the door partially closed. If they really want it nice and tightly closed, then they close it from the inside and use the emergency door to exit.
