You need to have at least a bachelors degree to work in the field. With a Bachelor's degree you can do what is called rehab work which intails teaching things such as assertiveness, parenting, anger managment or stress management. If you are wanting to actual counseling you will need at masters degree and possibly more depending on what state you are living in. Yes you do listen to people's problems. You also do lots of paperwork. You find the job like any other job. Jobs can exist in private practice, community mental health centers, and inpatient facilities. Teh goal of counseling is to help people find their own answers and to live up to their potential.
