Some hot packs are: hot bottles which work well when you keep it applied and the heat can continue for a few more minutes after taking it off. The con is that you may have to use it multiple times.

Heating pads is another kind of hot pack. With this one the heat can stay a bit longer especially if it's electric. The con is that it can run up the electric bill depending on how often you use it.

There are also electric blankets that are also used sometimes to help with pain but again if left on long enough you can run up the bill. The other thing is along with the heating pad is that sometimes if not careful could be a fire hazard.

There are also special heat packs that are made with herbs or rice socks that you can heat in the microwave that can be helpful. When the heat goes down though then you have to take them to the microwave to heat them again.

I would recommend checking with your doctor or physical therapist (if a physical therapist is involved as well) to see what they say.
