well ace...this is easier said then done. Most of the glazes you see on custom cabinets like those displayed in home depot and lowes are done with a sprayer. its true you can get different color stains and different sheens and with different applications will come different results. staining with a brush will give different finishes then staining with a foam brush and both will be different from staining with a wool rag. Some of the glaze finishes applied by kraftmaid and american woodmark and down by hand during the building process...thus the different look of each piece. Lowes and HD do sell different glazes...go to the store and get a how to book on this...as some glazes do not work with stain.
and regardless of what anyone tells you...read the labels on ALL your cans before you start or it may be costly to fix.

make sure all surfaces are sanded well. then you can apply polyurathane just go to your local homedepot or lowes in the paint dept.......and compare (satin-gloss-flat etc)and pick the finish that best fit your needs.
