The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program does list 1581 volcanoes with images, descriptions, and activity reports that are kept current. It also contains maps and is searchable. See:
http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/allvolcs.htm
or the main page at:
http://www.volcano.si.edu/index.cfm

They haven't published a book, but have published a few CD-ROM's that cover special regions.

It is far more complete than Wikipedia and isn't modified on a random basis to include erroneous information.

I doubt there is one singular book that is so extensive.

Wikipedia has a fairly complete listing of major volcanoes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_volcanoes. You can then search for articles about them using http://www.sciencedirect.com or http://www.jstor.com. You can also try Google Scholar.
