Being the manager doesn't mean you tell them what to wear and how to cut their hair. It means you negotiate for them....with all the club owners and promoters who would hire them. Try to get them not only the best money, but the best placement on the bill and the best exposure.
For example, Saturday night, followed by Friday night, followed by Sunday night, are good exposure. The audience has a fighting chance to be there.
The manager also tries to get the band a good record deal. That means they have to work on original material that's good enough to make hit records with.
The only bands that get anywhere are original bands. Even if they only make a little money and have a little fame, they get further than a cover band that may play three nights a week in their own area but not be known for anything but their covers.
A good band must have:
a van or small truck to carry the equipment
the sound and lighting equipment needed to play venues that don't have thier own but would like to hire you
each individual musician in the band must have his or her own equipment....
And a band today needs a Website, with mp3 clips, which means you'd better have your own studio setup too...and make some vid clips while you're at it.
