I had my ears repierced this afternoon. I haven't worn earrings in years, but the orignal sets of piercings hadn't completely closed up. The re-piercing didn't hurt very much, either, and the holes are clean and dry this evening. (I bought titanium earrings -- WONDERFUL for people with allergies like mine.)

My question is: should I wait the 6 to 8 weeks suggested for first time piercings to change earrings? Or would it be OK to change earrings a little sooner since this is the second time? Thanks for your help!

Amy, I learned what I was allergic to by trial and errors. The first time I had my ears pierced, I tried every kind of earring under the sun: hypoallergenic (the Whispers brand), plastic, 14 ct. gold, etc. My ears always got red and infected.

Not too long ago, a friend with similar allergies told me about the titanium earrings. I've had these in all day and not one problem. (If I'm allergic to something, it shows up within minutes.)

You can either do trial and error testing or go to the doctor to find out what you're allergic to. You may be able to wear the titanium earrings because there is only a trace amount of nickle in the metal.

Usually, re-piercing in the same area as the original piercing shouldn't require much healing at all, if the holes were still partially intact. I think it would be perfectly okay to change earrings sooner in your case. I had my ears re-pierced this summer, and they are still kind of tender since they were pierced in a different area. It took a good three or four months before I could wear anything but the gold starters. I had to use peroxide on the ears every morning and night. But I think you'll be just fine with a shorter recovery period.

I had the same problem. It doesn't make too much difference whether it's over the lump or not, except it tends to close up faster if you go back to not wearing earrings very often. If you go higher or lower you have to redo both. Some people do it once and it stays ok. So test to make sure you need to first. My left ear was still fine but my right ear keeps closing when I go too long w/o earrings. But rather than go to the expense of having it done in a store I freeze the lobe between two ice cubes. I use a washcloth to hold them there w/o freezing my fingers. Then once numb I take a sewing needle, run it over the gas stove flame to sterilize, run it through the ice to cool, then using the hole still opened in the front I run the needle through it to the other side. I let it sit there about a half hour, applying alcohol every 10 mins. or so to keep it from getting infected, then take it out & put a small earring with a post in. I leave the earring in 48 hrs. & apply alcohol to it a couple of times a day. By then the hole is pretty much permanent again. Except for the numbing process you don't feel anything, including the alcohol. But if you're chicken go to some place like Claire's & buy some earrings that come with a free piercing. It's a lot better than just paying for the piercing again which cost almost as much.

I would wait the 6 to 8 weeks.
I had my ears pierced redone 2 times. If anything goes wrong and you have to do it again it will be very annoying so i suggest no to do it sooner.
I have allergies too. How do you learn what your allergic to?

It really does not matter about changing earrings now that you have had the holes reopened. Just as long as you make sure that area is cleaned and some earrings are in. You can stop wearing earrings in those holes once all the soreness and bleeding stops.

You could probably change them earlier, but piercing is piercing. Anytime you poke a hole in your skin, the tissue will try to heal itself, no matter how many times you do it. Keep them clean and keep some earrings in that you are not allergic to, and you should be fine.

When I re-pierced my ears I didn't have to leave them in. I could just wear whatever earrings I wanted anytime.
