1. Figure out which way you ride - which foot in back when you slide across a smooth floor in your socks? Which hand on top when you cross your arms? Right - you are regular, Left - you are "goofy" (many of us are - don't fight it!)

2. Get used to your equipment. If it is rental, season rental, or your gear - spend a few minutes to learn how to work the binding buckles, the leash, the boot laces, etc. This will be hard when you have gloves on and are in the snow.

3. Learn to fall. Falling forward, fall to your knees and forarms - do NOT fall on your hands which can break a wrist. Falling backward - do NOT fall on your hands or directly on the center of your butt which can break your tail bone - try to fall to one side or the other.

4. Take a lesson and learn edge control, balance on an edge, and slipping down the hill on both edges before you ever try a turn.

5. Have fun and don't get frustrated - it will take a couple of days on the run to get good enough to not constantly fall.

Good Luck

Balance is the key, and you have to be always on one edge. It helps you to turn if you put your weight on your front foot rather than leaning back (a natural reaction that takes some conscious effort to correct). And don't try to turn from one edge to the other too soon, you need to let your board go straight down the hill a bit before switching edges.
