I can't think of any singers who remind me of Ella but as far as Billy Holiday goes I have always thought that Erykah Badu sounds a lot like her. For Sarah Vaughn I would say Jill Scott, maybe.

That was a rare time in the 50s and 60s when Sarah,Ella and Billie Holiday all were singing for us to hear. You can also add the great Mahalia Jackson who although a gospel singer who refused to sing in saloons or clubs where liquor was served was fantastic. Anita O'Day who passed recently also was a great Jazz singer as was June Christy and Julie London who today Diana Krall is close to her style. Peggy Lee another great singer from that era and Nancy Wilson still with us today I am sure your dad is aware of most of the singers I mentioned . Dinah Washington also was from that era.All were singing in the same era,and what an era it was for singers like that!!There is a singer these days Karyn Allyson who has put out some delicious Jazz vocal albums. I mention Mahalia Jackson because I have heard another great female singer who sings only with her church choir these days, but at a funeral service for a neighbor she sang so beautifully I was startled to hear her singing.

go to Amazon.com and at the bottom of the page there is a section called askville. Sort of like yahoo answers, but about what you are looking for. . Anyway, ask them this same question and they will get back to you about it.
here is the link:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=music&field-keywords=vaughn%20sarah&results-process=default&dispatch=search/ref=pd_sl_ya_flat-hi_musicpi_30554074_1&results-process=default
it is for music by Sarah Vaughn, so like I said near the bottom of the page it will ask if you found what you were looking for and then there is a link for askville by Amazon and it says real people with real answers.
Sorry, I don't know anything about jazz, but maybe they can help you out.

your grandpa is so right, and you can't improve on an original. Why don't you just download some songs from those ladies and make a cd of what you know he would love?
Sarah Vaughan
Dinah Washington
Etta James
Billie Holliday
Ella Fitzgerald
Lena Horne
