He was a very popular person in Texas. When he was running for the vice-presidency, he also ran for his senate seat. He won both elections.

He blocked Border enforcement and letting illegals come into the country. Until President Eisenhower went around him and removed all his buddies from the border and installed his own people. That stopped the illegals for 10 years, which was when LBJ became President.

Lots and lots of funny quotes, for example, when asked why he didn't fire J. Edgar Hoover (who he reportedly despised), he replied, "Because I would rather have in inside the tent pissing out, instead of the outside of the tent pissing in."
