IF the piece of coal had been under intense "pressure"
and was very old and was measured by the 4C's -
perhaps it would be of more value. Wiser man or woman
once said " be aware of "VALUE..... not price"
What defines "wealth or success or happiness? Now,
that is over with. SURE WITHOUT A DOUBT ....

I can't think of anyone, but I just wanted to say I love your screen name Throw_away_your_television. My husband and I have lived w/o an "idiot box" for 10 years and while other people think it's odd, they also admire our marriage and our family and find the things we do with our time more interesting!!! I guess if I got a TV I might sell it on craigslist, because a lump of coal probably wouldn't fetch much $$$. haha

some of the presents one of my father's never married sister were really strange. We saw her every few years and she just never kept track of our ages. One year my brother in high school got a sweater with a cowboy on it (size was right for a 6 year old, not a 16 year old) I was 11 and she gave me an old fashioned purse with a matching cigatette case. 5 years later we laugh about it, but we were not happy with the presents.

Jeez...one year I got this ridiculous sweater from an aunt that was made in Finland. It looked so hideous but I had to make a nice gesture and wear it. I'd choose coal over that any day.

Well... It is the thought that counts,.....BBBUUUTTT, once we had a Christmas party at one of my old jobs years ago, and they gave us each a VERY SMALL fruitcake that tasted HORRIBLE and was very dry. As we left the party, there was a trash can next to the door and I $#it you not, it was full of these fruitcakes!!!!! (This was a pretty good size company and we really worked hard and had a good year.)

yeah, I like this question.

Last year my own mother gave me a sweater (I kidd you not) with a HUGE glitter mouse on it, complete with bows and fuzzy antlers. (I was 16!) At first I thought she was kidding but she said she said it looked just like the Abercrombie mouse (I had an A&F obsession back then). Now, yes it is that thought that counts and all that and it would have been okay if I could put it in the back of my closet and never wear it again but...
Two days later my mom and I were going to a movie, just the two of us. I was actually excited, I hadn't hung out with my mom in a while and I'm not embarassed to hang out with her or anything. Well, I came down stairs wearing an abercrombie shirt and my mom cried "Alaska honey! Wear your new mouse shirt, try it out."
"I want to save it for school mom..." I protested.
"But I wanted you to wear it, I bought it with today in mind."

What ever, I thought, one day couldn't hurt. And I was going out with my MOM for goodness sake.
At the movie thearter my mom and I were just about to take our seats when she said "Okay, now for the surprise, I invited someone for you."
That's when my mom's old friend from high school came out, with her cute son just one year older than me. He looked at me and smiled...I was so happy he thougth I was cute! Then he laughed, and I remembered my moose shirt that I was wearing. I tried to explain but he didn't believe me, and the whole night was a disaster, he sat next to his mom in the movies instead of me!

Yes, coal would have been better...

I got a tie rack when I was about 7. I was in parochial school at the time and did in fact wear ties on a daily basis...but what made them think I'd want a tie rack I'll never know.

My aunt gave me a shirt from Hollister after I just told my cousin how stupid she was to buy clothes from them when they fall apart so easily, as well as a bottle of perfume they make because it was a 'free gift' if she bought the shirt for me and I'm allergic to perfume.
