Online playability is quite limited to the PS2. The new generation systems: Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 are all built to connect to the internet fairly easily. Anyways, connecting to the internet with a PS2 is fairly easy as you can connect the system to a router via an ethernet cable. However, most people don't have their video game systems even remotely close to their routers. This is why "online play" was not very popular with the PS2s. As for your son's friends playing online games on their PS2s, they may be correct. They probably just hooked their PS2s to their internet via ethernet cables. However, I wouldn't be too impressed as it sounds like its more of a bragging right kind of thing than a practical means for playing online games. Also, there isn't much to worry about since the PS2 does not have a included browser that allows its user to surf the internet. So, your son should be safe from visiting sites he is not allowed to see. Anyways, good luck and enjoy!

There are two versions of the PlayStation 2 Video Game Console. The original version is generally referred to as the "fat" PS2. The updated version is the Slimline. The easiest way to tell, besides the thickness of the console is the way you load a game into the unit. The "fat" PS2 has a disc tray that slides out and in while the Slimline has a normal "pop-top."
If you have the original "fat" PS2 you will need to purchase an adapter that attaches to the back of the PS2 unit. This adapter is hard to get since it is no longer manufactured, you will have to either go on eBay or amazon to find one, depending on the seller it may run about $40 - $80+ dollars.
If you have the slimline PS2 it is Internet ready, simply plug in your Cat5 cable into the rear of the PS2 and run the start-up utility disc that came with the system.
If you have any further questions there are always various video gaming sites that have helpful FAQs regarding your question. Such as Gamespot, and IGN. This is the site for Gamespot's forum. http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=20372554#
Have Fun. Side note, you'll need a reasonably fast connection for on-line to be any worth, if you have dial-up, forget it, the connection will be so slow and laggy I doubt your son will be able to do much.

There's a particular cable you can get to connect a PS2 to your cable outlet.
If you have the right games, this allows for "online play."
