Why are people blonde or brunette? It's a genetic occurrance, unless you're very religious, in which case it's a choice...though I don't know anyone who would CHOOSE to be ostracized, criticized, stereotyped etc ...
If it were a choice, we'd all come to that crossroads at some point. I for one, NEVER recall thinking about whether or not I wanted to be gay or straight. I'm straight and that's just the way it is.

Complicated. Gay is not the same as same-sex attracted - the identity (and identifier) didn't exist as such before people in Western cultures sarted to live "out". I choose to live "out" because my same-sex attractedness is important to my identity, and I refuse to hide it (like, to a paranoid extent, though that doesn't mean I go around screaming about it). It might make some people "uncomfortable"; but to them, I say "get over it!"... it's a self-respect thing.
I think same-sex attraction is mostly a biological thing. It's not a way-out thing for people to understand that some children are born with "indeterminate" or "ambiguous" primary sex characteristics (something which is often "corrected" surgically - I won't go into the ethics of this, too complex). I think it's time people understood that the same thing can happen to less "outwardly visible" aspects of sexual and gender identity. The brain is gendered, too - why should it not be subject to nature's randomness?

Well,i am gay. And im not entirely sure why. I read a VERY informative book and it said that many things can cause it. One way is when we are about 8-11, a very crucial part of our life, we are subjected to something. Maybe we discover porn. This causes confusion if subjected too early to it. Mabey another child with this same experience decides to "play" with you. Many things can lead to it. Some scientists believe that it is hereditary, a recessive trait lying dormant in your parents. Either way, it isnt our fault. we dont choose to be gay. many of us would give anything to be straight. It is ridiculous to me that peole can be homophobic nowadays. Its the only kind of pregidous that is alive and well today. Why do straight peole hate us, you might ask? Maybe we make them feel less manly. Most are "scared " we will come on to them. They are just flattering themselves, because most are ugly as hell. Ridiculous! here is a site for all you christian peole who think we are, "rebelling" or "choosing" to be gay. www.wouldjesusdiscriminate.com just so you know, that IS a real site, im not being a smart ***.

Some people are gay for a number of reasons...
Many people are gay at Christmas time. Probably all the presents they get. Sometimes birthdays make people feel gay, unless they are not looking forward to getting older...in which case they may be sad or angry. Finding true love can make people very gay. Buying a new puppy can make someone gay, too. There are lots of reasons. ;)

I don't think you can fully determine why some one is gay or not. Just the same as you can fully determine why one person is white or the next is black. Where all born different, we all live our lives's different and our dreams are different. They may all have things in common but they are still different.
Why are poeple gay. Is like asking , Why did you ask that question? People could give you a million different answer's, and then there would still be no , right nor would there be a wrong answer.

Because someone said "Lets create a label, a word, to put into a single category a broad range of individuals that we want to treat the same way." That is the solitary root of the creation of gayness. Think about it for a minute.
Each of us is so different and unique that saying one is gay, bi, lesbian, etc, is really not much different from saying one is human. We all express ourselves in ways that are meaningful to us. Expressing ourselves in ways that lack meaning yields emptiness. Something here about authenticity.
There is no gay. There is you, and you, and you and me. And we are all together. Coo Coo Ka Choo.

I already answered this question before, so I'll just copy it. It seems like a rather common question, and someone asked a similar question at http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Av.4gj3z_RlNJNKpEvlbuKfty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071020083703AA8TqPl&show=7#profile-info-5gEXHzxNaa
If the link doesn't work for you, look up "Why do people choose same sex partners?" by a user named "sara".
"I'm not quite sure, but now I think of it, I think I remember reading that something goes wrong in-utero, though I'm not sure if it's genetic related, but it messes up some things relating to the differences between boys and girls. So, that person has the genitalia and in general the physical appearence of one sex (with some changes, such as perhaps some physical features of the opposite sex. I think they found in homosexuals that their ear structure tends to be somewhat similar to the opposite sex), but have the sexual attraction of someone of the opposite sex, within degrees, the most common measurement being the Kinsey scale. So in short, someone who's physically predominently one sex has the sexual attraction of the opposite sex, leading to boys attracted to boys and girls attracted to girls."
In short, genetic factors lead to minor development problems in the mother's uterus that mix up male and female traits, such as the part of the brain that will eventually decide who the person's attracted to, then depending on how much was mixed up, factors of post-natal development factor into whether the person turns out to be gay or not (and how gay, for that matter. Kinsey gives a continuum, though "Gay, Bi, and Straight" is more convenient than quoting the Kinsey scale.
P.S. I'm sure you'll get dozens of answers, and I'm sure a quarter of them will be retarded, and another quarter will be people getting defensive.

Why are some people left handed? Why do some people seem to have a natural aptitude for maths?
Nobody really knows. People are who they are and the fact that we are not all identical copies of one another makes the world a richer and more varied place to live.

Why are people straight?
They are attracted to the same sex and that's fine. If they love the person than thats all that matters. I'm not gay but I have no problem with people who are.

Same reason some people are straight. Everybody's brain develops a little differently and in gay people, their brain is programmed to like their own sex. There's a theory that if the mother's womb has too much estrogen, it may increase the chance of giving birth to a homosexual child.
