Even the office of the president is to be in the service of the people, and is just a job. The people deserve respect more, and the only way a president deserves respect (or even the office), is if he puts the people first. *sm*

If your speaking of moral respect then the answer is none. But since moral presidents ended with Lincon you have to give respect to an office that with a nod and a few uttered words could have a fatal automobile accident arranged for you hours later. There have been few respectable presidents in this countrys history and our current president is not one of the lucky.

It does so because of the authority it gives the person holding it. However, the person holding this position needs to earn the respect of those who elected him, and he has to keep it. Clearly Bush hasn't done that, considering all the support he's lost with the mess he's gotten the US into regarding this war.

Because in a democratic republic, he/she has been chosen by the majority (...) and as such is the embodiment of the will of the people.
One needn't respect the office holder, just the office.
