Its not just teens everyone cares about what other people think. It is kind of a rating system. If a lot of people like me then I must be good.
Baby's react to smiles and laughs repeating the stunt if they are praised enough.
Adults are constantly hiding family issue's or money problems so no one else gets the wrong Idea.
Teens do take it to the extreme as they do with most things do to all the changes there body is going through and there lack of real life experiences.
Strive to be happy with yourself and not care what others think and you will live happily.

Well, the issue is acceptance. You will be eaten alive by other groups if you have no one else to be with who will protect you. If you are not accepted, you will probably have no friends.
Another issue is: What does my crush think of me? This comes about because, clearly, if your crush dislikes you, you won't go out and it will hurt.
As a teenager, I have found friends that let me be myself and I can wear what I want to wear, and so can they. I am so glad that I found such good people who care about me rather than what I wear.
I hope that helps.

When we are young, it is important to us to fit in and get along. It isn't until many years later, when our best friends have come and gone and those jerks in High School that thought they were so cool, seem just like a distant memory.
Those people can only hurt you if you let them. Just remember some day you won't have to ever see them again, and if you do, you will be mature enough to handle it.
For now, ignore the ones that talk trash or act like they are too good for you. Take comfort in the knowledge that your wonderful and loved and one day, they will be alone with no friends if they continue on that way.
Either way, your better for knowing that you don't need their negativity in your life.
Good luck

It is not all teens. It is really mostly in America!
I am American but lived in Europe for several years. My kids grew up there. They live here as adults now but always dream of going back to Europe. They cannot believe how teens are here in the USA about being so HUNG UP on how they look and dress, like that is all that matters to find VALUE in one another.
People in Europe do not have identity crisises like they do here because of their APPEARANCES. They seek to find what a person is from the heart not by what they wear! They concentrate on their studies, their familiy and friends. Teens in Europe accually have intellegent conversations even at young ages and do not judge people like that.
Remember you are who you are because of what you learn from your families and friends. Thats just society here in the USA today and YEAH IT SUCKS! It is ignorant.
All the Best,
Lisa

It's part of developing a sense of identity. That's why teens care more what their friend think and say than their parents and other adults. By 21, this changes back to parents and adults.

Doesn't everyone care what others think of them, at some level or another? It's unfair to simply blame teenagers when many full-grown, mature adults act the same way. Humans are social creatures, and we simply like being liked and respected. Teenagers just can't hide their need for others' approval as well yet.

Not all of us care! There are the few blessed souls who agree with me when I say that there is no reason to care, becuase most teens have the shortest atention spans; even if you do something stupid, it will be dropped for the next juicy gossip. -shakes head sadly- Maybe someday they'll learn? <3

It could be the hormone thing and it could be that they're developing a sense of self and being in tune with the popular stuff keeps them from being ridiculed.
I say heck with that and just be who you are...but I'm not a teen anymore LOL

its not so much what other people think of them, its more so the fact of rumors, or secrets getting out and everyone knowing and that's why people care. i care because i don't want people talking about my life like a TV show, i don't go to great lengths to stop people from talking about me, i just hate rumors, but i guess people have been abused, bullied, called names, ditched, thrown things at, beaten up and left alone because of the things we wear who we date, our own opinions and what we do in life. its really no reason at to why, people are just b!tches, that's why.

Teens are still forming their values and learning to get along in the world and where they fit in.
The need to belong to a "tribe" is a primitive one and is innate in all humans.
