buy some real cheap wall paper and tack it to the wall in one area and let the child draw there and just make sure they know that, that is the only place they can do that, as for getting it off erase what you can and repaint, believe it or not pencil can be harder to get off than permanent marker.

I'm gonna agree with the answer stating Mr. Eraser, though it may be magic eraser? By Mr. Clean?
The issue isn't so much the pencil, or any other substance; it's the fact that the wall may be painted in FLAT; which is far more porous that Satin; etc. and has a low level of tolerance for being cleaned.

Pencil marks are hard to get off,,,what ever you try don't use anything with oil in it..or you will have an oily spot on top of the pencil marks....flat paint ,most likely to be latex...I would use a primer & touch up the paint....and get the child something to scribble on ,like something you can get for kids at Wal Mart...had the same problem with my little girl(the artist)

I've seen it above a couple times, third the opinion, using the Magic Eraser is the best solution. Mr Clean makes one, DAP makes one (I think). . . point is, there are a couple kind on the market and I've used both.
It has a white side that diminishes over time because of its eraser qualities and a blue side that works as a debris cleaner upper.
The magic eraser is the best solution. It won't mar like a regular eraser and is far less a job than re-painting. They are about 2 bucks.
Try it and you'll find yourself magic erasing everything.

Thanks for the advice about lighter fluid and paper towel. The rest of you hacks need to get a life and quit trying to be know-it-all's. If you don't know what you are talking about, refrain from advice as I could have ended up painting 3 whole walls because of simple pencil marks that you hacks said would not come off and needed to be primed and re-painted.

Mr. Clean's Magic eraser will work! takes off most things. Don't wet the whole spong, just enough to do the job and rub gently or your paint will be erased as well!
