It is a memory card, but you can play most games without it. I recommend getting the 20gig hard drive. It just plugs into the top of the game system. I also recommend that you connect the 360 to a high speed Internet connection. Xbox live has alot of updates and patches for the system and games. The silver package for Xbox live is free to anyone with a 360. The gold package is the one you can play live on the Internet with other people.

The 360 HDD (hard disk drive) is placed on top of the system, outside of the system. It does save data, and they are suggested, but you don't need one to play games. Having said that, I know some high profile games require a hard drive. The short answer is- They are super powerful memory cards, in essence, and you don't need them for every game.

A hard drive is inside the xbox. If you have the core system you will need a memory card. If you have the Premium system it already has the hard drive. Just like a computer has.

the HD is just like a memory card just bigger. It is possible to play games without it but to use xbox LIVE or to save games you will need a HD or at least some other sort memory card. I assure you though you will want a HD in the long run.

yes and yes. i didn't buy a 360 with a hardrive because at the time i bought it the price difference was the same as a seperate hard drive so i decided i'd just get one later. if you download stuff from xbox live then you'll need a hardrive because the card doesn't hold very much.

Yes, in the way that you can save things like saves for games and music on it but you can't get games on the hard drive unless you know how to hack it.
