I just bought Ford Taurus GL (1994) and started having a problem. At first, steam was coming out of hood and I took the car to Tunex, and they told that Water Pump needs to be replaced, they replaced it and at the same time they performed Emission Tests. The car passed the Emission Test, and when I was driving it back home, "Check Engine" light came on. What is it? Why is it showing this? Does it disappear? Any suggestions? Thank you.

So, Did the repair shop break my engine while replacing the water pump? Since they had to take out an engine, while replacing the water pump, is it possible for "check engine" to be on for a while before it goes off?

Don't freakout... many times it's something very minor. You need to hook up a scanner to it and pull the code. The port should be located somewhere around your dash, most likely underneath your steering wheel. Autozone lets you rent OBD2 scanners free of charge, however, 1994 is the year all cars began the process of switching from OBD1 to OBD2 so yours may either be hybrid, or still OBD1. Go to autozone and see if it will work with your car, because any dealership is going to rip you off... never go to a dealership.
