In an interview with Fortune Magazine’s Nina Easton, Dick Cheney conceded that as Halliburton CEO he opposed unilateral sanctions on Iran, even though he now strongly supports them.

Cheney explained that as a private sector official, he didn’t have any responsibility to be concerned about the impact of his company’s dealings with Iran:

Q: You opposed unilateral sanctions on Iran when you were CEO of Halliburton.

THE VICE PRESIDENT: I did…That’s a whole set of considerations that a CEO doesn’t have to worry about, that a private company doesn’t have to worry about. But the President of the United States does.

So, you think it’s OK to do business with America’s enemies if you can get away with it?

“To evade U.S. law, Halliburton set up an offshore subsidiary that engaged in dealings with Iran.”
“For Halliburton to have done this legally, the foreign subsidiary operating in Iran must be independent of the main operation in Texas. Yet, when an NBC producer approached managers in Iran, he was sent to company officials in Dubai. But they said only Halliburton headquarters in Houston could talk about operations in Iran. Still, Halliburton maintains its Iran subsidiary does make independent business decisions.”

Not according to the government at the time:

"The purpose of these sanctions is to dissuade Iran from supporting terrorism and from seeking to acquire weapons of mass destruction"

--Victor Comras, former State Department expert on sanctions.

In engineering graduate school we used to love it when requirements forced MBA students into our math classes because they could always be counted on to lower the curve to ridiculous levels.

It was his call whether he had Halliburton violate them.

Why is your loyalty to Bush/Cheney greater than your loyalty to America? You really do not care if our troops die in vain; if Bush Administration policies run against the nation’s welfare; and if they commit treason exposing CIA agents, huh?

You would think so, huh (for any normal person)? Bushbots act as if they are in some kind of Zombie-like trance. They are determined to believe that Afghanistan and Iraq are going great and that every terrorist in the world is so befuddled by Bush/Cheney wizardry that they forgot how to find America.

It does not matter that, as Daniel Griswald of the CATO Institute notes, "Terrorists aren't likely to sneak across the southwest border. They're likely to fly into JFK airport.” — great security, there, Mr. President.

It does not matter to them that the State Department and a consensus of America’s 16 Intelligence Agencies have determined that Bush Administration policy has resulted in more—and more deadly successful—terrorists, and that Americans as less safe and less secure from terrorist attack than they were before 9/11.

2007-11-26 15:37:09 · update #4

It does not matter to them that the then Republican dominated Congress’ own 9/11 and pre-war intelligence reports determined:

1. There were no terrorists in Iraq before Bush invaded;
2. Hussein did not allow terrorist training camps;
3. Hussein hated al Qaeda before we did;
4. Hussein did not hide al-Zarqawi, he tried to have him arrested, and of course
5. no WMDs or involvement with 9/11.

It does not matter to them that Bush has claimed the authority to disobey more than 750 laws enacted since he took office; or that he committed treason in exposing the identity of a CIA agent.

2007-11-26 15:37:39 · update #5

And, it obviously does not matter to them that Cheney acted above the law to put the profit margin of Halliburton before the interests of the United States in dealing with a nation that he, himself, calls a state sponsor of terrorism and one of the great Axis of Evil determined to destroy America.

And, yet, they have the nerve to call themselves patriots (of course, not in any way that would require them to actually serve their nation) and everyone else traitors. It would be funny were it not so pathetically sad and if did not result in so many American dead.

He was CEO at halliburton in the 90s. It wasn't his call at the time if there were sanctions or not on Iran. If you want to discuss the Sanctions in place you will have to talk to the Federal Government. Who was in the Oval office at that time?

And your suggestion for a company that can do all of what Halliburton is capable of ? There isn't one !

So to criticize an outfit that is better equiped, better staffed, and world wide is specious at best, and just more liberal obfucation at worst.

Cheney was right...it's not a CEO's job to figure out what's best for America, that's a political decision. CEO's answer to STOCKHOLDERS...not VOTERS !

When did you go to Wharton School of Business ?

When he was the CEO, Iran wasn't going full tilt boogie to develope nukes...things change !

That is the same irresponsible thinking that many of our companies are doing these days. Look at Walmart and Shell oil along with many more. The only reason no one says anything about them is because they aren't in the White House, but they couldn't care less about the US. It seems like they only care about their bottom line at all cost. Used to be different, people used to care about God, Family and country. Now they only care about themselves.
