In an uncharged atom, the number of electrons will be equal to the number of protons. The number of protons is the atomic number of the element. The number of neutrons will be the mass number of the nucleus minus the number of protons. For any charged atom, the number of protons minus the number of electrons will give you the charge of the ion.
