The only difference between punishment through justice and punishment through revenge is that justice is sanctioned by the community (government).
The community is usually displeased with revenge because "justice" also attempts to moderate the punishment and mete out rehabilitation. Simple revenge rarely pretends to have these added motives.
Public acceptance of revenge is mixed. If done within limitations, revenge is fully accepted, like when the shy kid punches the bully in the nose. And every action movie is hinged on the vicarious thrill of revenge on the bad guy taken by the hero.

The matter of justice through revenge is all a matter of cultural context. There are societies that demand that revenge be taken for any act of transgression on another party. This is seen as normal and a way of controlling others in that persons are less likely to commit acts if they will suffer consequences. Its the old deterrent philosophy at play. These societies are generally very small and isolated from central governments so the general rule of law is not available for justice.
In other, larger societies, revenge is heavily discouraged if not outright criminal. The rule of law provides sanctions to persons that commit acts and is viewed as a transgression against the society as a whole. That is why when a crime is prosecuted, the complaint is lodged on behalf of the state. (ex. The State of New York vs. defendants name) Without this rule of law, any large society will quickly degrade in anarchy.

No. You can never restore what was damaged by damaging something else. However Society feels people are justified in perpetuating hate and violence againest a person who destroyed something or someone or robbed something. A price must be paid in order to thwart the intents of other calloused uncontrolled people. Thus we must have punishment, however if a twig is severly bent you are not going to straighten it, thats up to God.

I have never gone out of my way for revenge, although I have noticed that most of the time it takes care of itself. Within a short period of time, funny how that works.
