Funny you should ask, I was just discussing postage rates to New Zealand when I saw this question. Yes it does cost more. A First Class letter weighing no more than one ounce to New Zealand is $.90. It is an additional $.90 for each additional ounce up to 8 ounces. You can send a one pound package to NZ at Priority Mail International rates for $18.50, or a Priority Mail International Flat Rate Envelope for $11.00, or a Priority Mail International Flat Rate Box for $37.00, or an Express Mail International Flat Rate envelope ( large envelope 9.5" x 12.5" ) for $25.00. The nice thing about the Flat Rate options are they are not restricted by weight. They are as much as you can stuff into the envelope. There are other options available. If you need more information be sure to contact your personal Postal representative.

It costs more to send a letter outside your country.
In fact, most stationery shops sell this really thin and light weight paper for writing letters to foreign countries so you don't pay as much on postage.
The cost depends on WEIGHT not so much as size of the letter. Is it 1/2 oz or 1 oz or 2 ounches, what?

It does. I remember it costing more for me to send letters back from japan. You can also go to the post office site and they will calculate it for you.

Yes, please go to the post office - they will weigh your letter and tell you different options to choose - then your letter will be safely securely sent. And you'll be happy.
