Many tropical cyclones includin hurricanes develop when the atmospheric conditions around a weak disturbance in the atmosphere are favourable.In the case of hurricanes,the different stages of farmations are given below.
Tropical depression( wind speed upto29 Knots),tropical storm(30 to 55 kts),hurricane-1(56 to 72 kts),hurricane-2 (73 to 85 kts),hurricane-3 (86 to 99 kts),hurricane-4(100 to 119 kts),Major hurricane(hurricane-5) above 120 Knots.

There are no preset stages, but most Hurricanes start as depressions, then tropical storms. Once formed they are categorized as a level 1-5 and they are monitored for strength or weakness changes!
