As always, you can take this in whatever direction you'd like to.

Anyway, the biggest surprise for me has been... PuckDat getting a badge! OMG, finally!
CONGRATS!!!!

(Yeah, I just noticed.)

...So who else wouldn't be surprised if he got a notice tomorrow morning reading that his account's been suspended? LOL.

The Montreal Canadiens, I thought they were destined for the basement after losing Souray, but I've been quite impressed with their play, especially Carey Price.

Also, Pittsburgh's start was quite shocking, I picked them to win the East (still might happen), but I didn't think a team with that much talent could be 3 games below .500 almost 20 games into the season, but they are turning it around now

I have to say the New Jersey Devils. They're sitting at the bottom of the atlantic division and Brodeur has some pretty inflated numbers so far.
Someone else mentioned the Pens, but I don't see them as a surprise as much as a disappointment. They didn't really do anything to address their needs in the offseason and Michel Therrien seems to be really close to losing the team. Rumor is Shero might be looking at Randy Cunneyworth of the AHL's Amerks.

That the Lightning have been SO inconsistent. Win 4, lose 7, win 4, lose ? Also, I thought that the Leafs were going to have a better year (wishful thinking). The Habs new rookie goaltender Carey Price has surprised me (need to make that kid a regular). Jonathan Toews has been very impressive and surprising to me.

Not surprising: Ottawa and Detroit.

The number of good young players I'm seeing is a surprise. A pleasant one at that.
Another surprise is seeing Europeans getting physical and fighting. I know the world's going to end soon now.

I got another violation notice today too and every answer I give any more in any section ends up with two thumbs down within the hour. I can't be suspended if I'm a good boy so I only insult people using asnswers. Doing it in a question is a real no-no.
Thanks for your tireless work campaigning for me. ;)

Biggest surprise for me personally is this:

Colin White returning to the Devils lineup has been a GOOD thing. Who'da thunk?

But outside my favorite team the biggest surprise to me has been the outstanding defensive play of the Columbus Blue Jackets. They have, what, 6 shutouts already?

The biggest surprise so far has been the slow starts in Calgary and Tampa. While Calgary is traditionally a slow starter, I would have expected them to turn it around by now. I kind of expected Pittsburgh to suffer a bit of a sophomore jinx, so I'm not too surprised there.
On the positive side, Chicago is a pleasant surprise, when they signed Samsonov I figured it was going to be the same old same old.

Anything, huh? That no crips or bloodz gang member in Toronto has shot at anyone well known. Just to make this hockey-related, as bad as this sounds, I really hope someone in the high up in Leafs management gets in the crossfire. Politically, there would be hell and federal, provincial, and municipal leaders would be under tons of pressure from their own peers to do something about this out of their own fears (because no rich person with power would give a damn to the lower-middle class who are the ones getting in the crossfire of these gang shootouts). Wow, that was pretty dark....

Oh, sorry, you wanted something happy? Um....I'm quite surprised that you haven't turned a gay man straight with your personality. How's that? :)

Pascal Leclaire and the Blue Jackets.
Who would have said he had so much shoutout and that Columbus would not be dead last.
It help that big Nash as found back his scoring touch.

Pascal Leclaire has shocked me a lot. This guy went from bad goaltender to awesome goaltender in just one year. This guy already has 6 shutouts and the Blue jackets are off to their best start in their history. I can see them making the playoffs this year, as long as they don't have any meltdowns and maintain their winning strategy.
