I'm not really sure what these are. Are they necassary to play a certain game (rom) or is it possible to not even bother with them? I don't understand why some games have them and others don't. I haven't found a game yet that actually needed a chd file...

Most games do not need the CHD files but 228 games do. If you don't want to bother then don't just understand that if a game does require one then it will not work. If you are using MAME32 plus ver 120u1 (or really any MAME32) in the first box down to the bottom it has CHD. open it . the second box will show all the games requiring CHD files.
