The Federalist Papers were written by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay to advocate reasons for ratifying the proposed U.S. Constitution by the the States comprising the USA, which at the time were governed (although affiliated would be a better term) under the Articles of Confederation.

They outlined the need for a stronger central government, which was the main issue of the Federalists. This was after the success of the Revolution, but before the adoption of the Constitution, when the central government was very weak and in danger of collapsing.
