When I was in 4th grade [back around 1974], I auditioned for the school talent show and didn't make it. [Frankly, I had no talent.] My "rejection" slip thanked me for auditioning but that unfortunately not everyone could be in the show. The slip also had some festive drawings on it to keep the mood light.

My niece, now in 4th grade herself, auditioned for her school's talent show last week, and just showed me the rejection slip she received today. It had drawings of those hideous, attitude-laden Bratz dolls and had this text: "Tough luck, girl -- we can't ALL be Divas." One of the Bratz was looking away with her nose turned up, and her hand was up in one of those vapid ghetto "talk to the hand" insults.

What the hell has happened to manners, civility, respect, and letting kids have innocent and simple childhoods? Why didn't the teacher use a simple and gentle "thanks but no thanks" note? Why on earth is coarse "attitude" being glamorized by an elementary school teacher?

"Attitude" answers and things like that can be used among adults who can understand the campy humor of it. NOT a 4th grade child who simply dreams of being a star. To that child, being in that talent show was her equivalent of going to Hollywood. At least for that week, y'know?

That just teaches hate and snottiness. You are right Pippi, that was very poor. Even an old queen such as myself, who loves campy sayings and such would NEVER do that to a child.

That note was not cute. Whomever meant it to be missed the mark horribly...

Too bad. It's the child who's tender at this point, not the writer of the note.

I think that the teacher was just putting pictures of dolls that were popular with her students (popular and corporate culture doesn't make a habit of demonstrating good morals). The teacher should get credit for trying to make the class interesting and up to date. I'm pretty sure that teacher's don't like snotty attitudes, and they have to put up with more attitude than just about anyone else.

I'm surprised you remember your 4th grade talent show rejection slip, probably most kids will forget about it moments after they throw it away on their way home from school. It doesn't seem to me that one rejection slip can be interpreted as promoting bad attitudes. I think that most teachers do their best to instill good moral values and to give a their students the best possible education.

Often times teachers are doing their best at a difficult job and put under microscopes by their students, parents, administration, and guidance. It's impossible to make everyone happy all the time.

Our whole society has become more coarse. It used to be a novelty when someone would give an answer or make a comment that wasn't politically/socially correct. Lenny Bruce got a lot of attention for doing that. So did Richard Pryor. What made those men stand out was that their behavior was a rarity. Now days, everyone is uncensored in all situations. It's too much, IMO. Everyone offers too much information.

I even have an exceedingly sarcastic and acerbic humorousness, you would be taken aback and disgusted through most of the failings i detect humorous...yet that's terrible.i think of the instructor very for sure has a nasty experience of judgement.i'm no longer in choose of sheltering youngsters from the harsh international, yet even handing over information like that to an grownup may be unforgivably incorrect. That be conscious dosent in simple terms say which you probably did no longer make the shrink-all of us could handle that-in spite of the shown fact that it conveys INFERIORITY.A instructor could see that, and this one did no longer. She for sure desires greater preparation,or a sparkling activity.
