I already do. Sometimes it's a direct donation and sometimes it's through my church. (Having served as an elder in my church, I know where the money is going)

I would give more but the government thinks they can do it better.

that was how it was one in the old days and in some places it still does.

It was my privilege to sever on a non profit board for a few years and we had a Christmas party each year where members of this org could bring their children of grand children to see Santa and get a small gift or two.

It was done on a 100% aanonymous donation basis and these were not rich or well off type people and we always had a pick up truck or two full of toys left over which we also gave away anonymously.

Kind of like fishes and loaves

I donate my time already. Much more effective. It's very difficult to imagine someone living in a gated community risking contact with the truly needy.
