Not seeing the inside is the same as not living the examined life, which is the quest of all philosophical beings from Socrates on-ward. Living the examined life represents the fullest form of existence we can attain.

Because your ignoring the truth for a front that hides fears, insecurities, and all sorts of baggage. The end result is a lack of personality, perspective, individuality, and selflessness. If that is who you want to be or be around, then you may not consider it stupid. But eventually looks fade, and all that is left is "the inside." Think about that.

It may be unwise, but 'stupid' is a judgement call.

[edit] It is not wise because the essence of a situation often bears little resemblance to its superficial characteristics.
