The official word is:

Verizon Wireless: Users are charged for each text message they receive regardless of whether or not they open the message. It is possible to block all incoming text messages, but if users do this they also lose the capability to send text messages. Users who receive SPAM text messages can call Verizon and ask them to remove them from your bill. It is not possible to block text messages coming from a specific phone number.

(Remember, though - if you have unlimited texting, this doesn't apply anyway. It would never matter if you get 1,000 texts a day, you wouldn't get charged. It would just be a pain in the butt).

No way! The only way you get charged is if you send a text message, unless you have a plan, which is a low price every month. I would only suggest getting a text plan if you text a lot. Also you will get charged if you talk on the phone a lot, but that is normal, and that is what the cell phone is for. I am pretty sure it is free calls from 9:00pm on any day and free on weekends. (I also have Verizon) They might give you some additional info at verizon.com. (Listed below)

NOT if those txt messages come from other Verizon users. But if they come from people outside your network then you get charged for it. Most US cell phone networks charge for both INCOMING & OUTGOING txts. Other countries only charge for outgoing txts coz they don't think you should be responsible for the txts that other people send you.

i think so once they send it you pay for it..which is kinda stupid..go with u.s. cellular you get unlimited text messaging for only like 10.00 or 5.00 i cant remember or if you dont text at all then just take the texting off plus they have cool but cheap phones too =^) the most expensinve is the motorola Q which is about 300 without the contract..so if i were you i would switch

I have Verizon too. After talking to a representative, I discovered that no, they do not charge you. Why? You didn't send it, and you have no control over it. :)

Yes, on Verizon.

If you're having problems with someone text harrassing you, report it to Verizon and they will block it; otherwise, you will pay and pay and pay.

Yes! It's so stupid! Everytime you send a text, or a text message is sent to you, you are charged for it. That is, unless your plan states otherwise.
