STAR, how is your friend now? Those words are used out of custom or habit! That's the way they learn to talk. Most of the time the person that ask don't really care! I've went through this a lot and think I am being right! But anyway I wish they would say nothing! Take care! Jimmy.

That was meant as a courtesy. Translated it means.."What can I do to help you" without having to say those words. It gives the person a chance to decline or accept the help without too much fuss. What I think is worse is when people ask 'how are you?' knowing full well the person is very ill. The person has to decide to tell the truth or pass it off. Problem is, most times when people tell the truth, the one asking didn't really want to know..

It is a means to probe to try and find out what's wrong, without jumping to any conclusions. It is more a defense mechanism by the person asking the question.

It's just a term used out of concern and it's more polite than asking why they are crying.

I think it's basically just a way of asking, "What's wrong?"
What I'd really like to know is why people bother asking if they don't want to be told.

I believe that is the first thing that comes to there minds and it's just a little common courtesy.

It's the only thing they can think of to say to show they care and encourage the person to talk.

It's better than saying,"Are you going to total lose it and slash your wrists so you end up in a mental ward straight jacketed to the bed?"

Trying to show concern without getting involved. They are hoping you say, you are fine.
