Several presidents have been shot. Some of them have survived. Some of the earlier presidents may have been shot in military actions. But I think you may be referring to Abraham Lincoln's assassination by John Wilkes Booth. But McKinley was also shot as was Gerald Ford. For a while there in history, a president died in office every twenty years:
1960 election -- JFK in 1963
1940 election -- FDR in 1944 by natural causes
1920 election -- McKinley, I think
1900 election -- can't remember
1880 election -- also can't remember
1860 election -- Abraham Lincoln in 1861

Which one? Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, James Garfield was assassinated by Charles J. Guiteau , William McKinley was assassinated by Leon F. Czolgosz, and John Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald . Plus, Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded by John W. Hinkley Jr. but he later recovered.

That would be Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. Mr Linclon was shot in the movie theatere and Mr. Kennedy was shot in his vehicle.
