Not to sound like a lame Hallmark card, but we really do have the power and ability to choose to be happy.
If you look up the words "happy" and "happiness" in any dictionary, none of them will describe them as a permanent state of mind. Happiness is merely a feeling of contentment.
No one is going to come along, wave some magic wand, and make you instantly happy. Instead, you have to come to terms with life and make the best of things.
In a bad relationship that's bringing you down? Fix it, or end it.
Want more money? Search for a better job.
Need better skills to get that better job? Go back to school [community college is very affordable].
Unhappy because you're overweight? Develop some determination to stay on a diet, drinking plenty of water and getting daily exercise.
It takes no effort to sit and wallow, but it likewise accomplishes nothing. Force yourself to move forward, and things improve immensely.
By the way, I treated my "depression" with medicine for nearly ten years. I regret having done that. I finally took matters into my own hands and changed my approach to life. Haven't taken a pill in five years, and have never been happier and more content. It's not that life is never problematic and unpleasant, but rather that I realize that bad times eventually pass.

Unexplained sadness is indeed what depression is, but you might just be going through a rough patch. Lots of people feel funky during the holidays, especially when things are not as Norman Rockwell as they want. Primal scream therapy works great for me, that's just screaming by the way LOL. So does shooting things and breaking dishes. Someone once said that depression is anger that's lost it's enthusiasm. If you're already angry that's good!

A lot of time, that can be caused by extreme stress.
Maybe something in your life that you would rather not be there.
PMS.
Depression.
Anxiety.
It can be many different things.
Go to your doctor and just talk to him about all of the emotions you are feeling, the unhappiness that you feel and just be honest.
There are medications that he/she can prescribe to you.
Alot of times, people feel what you are feeling due to a chemical imbalance.
There are medications that are made especially for people with chemical imbalances. I have a chemical imbalance myself and am currently on Lexapro.
It is great! But everyone can be different.
Seriously, go talk to your doctor. Don't take this lightly.
A lot of times, people with chemical imbalances can string it out into something more complicated if it isn't treated for.
Good luck!!!!
Feel free to message me with any other questions.

i dont think so how old are you?
Edit:
it could grow into depression but at this point it isnt if its every once and a while like maybe once a week its probably just feeling down about normal life things and if its ongoing and never goes away its depression. i felt like that for a while and it grew and grew and grew soon enough i was on antidepressants (of course the situation that i was in did not help). if it continues for a month or so without stopping tell someone you could just need a little counseling.

it could be.. but a lot times your unhappy with yourself (too fat, not like the others etc) and you just can't pin point it. If your feeling unhappy and think it is depression take one of those depression quizzes then talk to a doctor.

it's not the not knowing, but the failure to really look inside yourself and admit to what may be wrong. Knowing you're depressed is just the realization of the feeling at the moment - most don't get past that to find out why they feel that way and what to do about it.

When I'm in that mood, I go to great efforts to find things that make me happy. It's not necessarily depression, but it can sure feel really close. It can even turn into depression if you let it get that far. So go do something you enjoy with someone you enjoy doing it with. Happiness and health go hand in hand.

To be happy is a very ambigious term. Happiness means many different things to all people. What does it mean to be happy for you? If you mean that you are sad much of the time, this could be a sign of depression. Depression is anger turned inwards. What are you angry about? Once you figure out what is making you angry, you are on your way to fixing it.

Pray and you'll do a ton of good for the world, and it will also make you feel peaceful (and happy).
Unhappy means you're far from God who is the source of Life and Joy!

It grows - trust me.
As you get older, you accept that your bio rhythms throw many things at you, though you never see it coming until you have a bad day.
I doubt you are depressed just yet - frustrated, probably.
Try to keep positive and active: hopefully you can avoid my symptoms.
