This is one of those topics that I emotionally feel so strongly one way - but history and statistics try to show it another way.
If we Americans legalized all of the "hard" drugs of cocaine, heroine, morphine, etc. Then "benefits" would be a lowering of crimes, regulation, taxation, and general betterment of the economic society. (1) according to this source.
The downside to this is that these drugs offer very little good, and any good is of a small scale if focused toward a specific ailment. Addiction is to be expected. Operating machinery would be very dangerous and unwise (cars, trucks, manufacturing, construction, fishery)
I chose to never participate because my faith tells me that my body is the Temple of God, and I am to respect and take care of it. It (my body) was entrusted to me, and any harm I do to it shows self destructive behavior. During my youth, I read "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck. The main character, a farmer, not certain of the timeframe of this story (it was written in 1931), grew wealthy because he was able to capitalize on the cocaine addiction of fellow feudal lords. The "habit" forced them to sell off their assets, and among the assets were 'the good earth' and the farmer was able to become a large land owner. And the description of what the drug did to the body was enough to discourage me from partaking in it's use. So, it weakens the character of the person and destroys the body. Two no-no's in my book.
So, if America were to do as they are doing in the Netherlands, here is what the DEA has to say about it. (2)Instead of a decrease in addicts, the numbers have soared.
In summary, the genie is out of the bag, and the chemical dependency, once it has it's hooks in the human brain, is nearly impossible to un-do. Best to have strong educational programs that show and emphasize the NEGATIVES of drug use (Any - Legal or Illegal, as the legal prescription forms are killers and do destructive side-effects to the human body as well . . .). Don't leave it up to others to teach your kids which road to take. As a parent, take the initiative to show your kids how dangerous any forms of drugs can be and to not play with them; avoid them; be smart.

I think it depends on what you are talking about. Narcotics I would say no. If you need a pain killer that strong a doctor would prescribe it. I do not think legalizing them would stop crime although it is possible the rate will drop. Yes they are a source for some heavy taxes but is the addictions of these [people worth the money. I do not think so. Too many people would be dying and this time it would be because they got the drugs legally.I think if they were legal then a lot of the gang activity would stop as well as gang killings but then hey would find some other illegal thing to get into so it would solve nothing.

Something like 1500,000 criminals are in US Pens. and 80% are said to be in for drug related crimes.( Up 50% in 20 years or so) But are drugs not just as freely available?
It would cost $1500/day to keep me in the Pen.
Criminality should be only "Endangering others while under the influence of drugs" and that must include prescription drugs too. And drug use must not be allowed as a defense argument.
Drugs are dirt cheap - legal morphine is about$0.50 / ampoule, like wise cocaine and pot. Illegality forces the price up as every authority has to be paid off, police in the street, prison guards, customs etc etc back to the producer!
In Canada our police are riddled with Cops paid to look the other way or look diligently in the wrong direction! Same with our Customs..enough money and they look the other way too!
The criminal gangs flourish with all this mass of UNACCOUNTABLE CASH to go after. In Vancouver area in Canada about 100 young men dead AND NOT A SINGLE CONVICTION! These guys were not addicts but just wanted the money. the BMW's the Gold Chains and the HOT CHICKS.
It's the addicts who have to steal cheat and prostitute and are involved in PETTY CRIME who get caught along with the street level dealers who get the LEGAL "SH!T" and plug our courts and hospitals with AIDS and other VD.
Note how Mr. Big is seldon caught in the USA and brought to justice?
Legalize ,regulate ,supply known purity and dose and at a cheap price, cost plus 5%. (OR SMUGGLING is encouraged!!)
Addicts will be able to work (example Rush Limbaugh) if they can get their fix legally.
Ultimate control is through PROPAGANDA/EDUCATION started in Kindergarten when kids are warned about crossing the street, the dangers and pleasures of bicycles fast cars and sexual activity. They must be taught about the pleasures and dangers of drugs AND booze .
Presently society is victimized at all levels by the present drug scene. Tax rates would decline about 10% and petty crime would be minimized if legalization was permitted. Criminal gangs would have to switch to stealing SUV's or Kidnapping wealthy people for ransom, much less lucrative pastimes.
I'm old(77) and drugs when easily available in the 1930's caused little in the way of a problem. SOCIETY ACCEPTED THEM WITH A BEMUSED TOLERANCE . THE VAUDEVILLE COMEDIANS RIDICULED THEM.
and as a young kid I can remember singing the song
"Cocaine Bill and Morphine Sue, walking down Fifth Avenue....." The Chorus was "Honey have a SNIFF on me, on me, Honey have a SNIFF on me" accompanied by sniffing the back of one's thumb.

twp factors right here hashish would not reason psychological complications, even if it does convey them to the exterior. if you're fantastically a lot depressed, hashish will make you depressed. if you're fantastically a lot psychotic, it's going to make you psychotic. in case you locate a lady beautifful, it's going to make you locate her extra proper. The netherlands (no longer basically Holland) hasn't legalised many drugs, it has decriminalised using hashish and some mushrooms, and we do not experience sorry about it. purely a million out of 17 milion inhabitants use cannabs commonly. Our numbers of harddrugaddicts is below different international locations. the percentage of people with psychological complications isn't any larger than in international locations with hard hashish-guidelines. the topic matters we do have are the outcome of growing to be the stuff nonetheless being unlawful, and stupid vacationers who opt for to apply stupid doses or mixtures of medicine
