Racer 51 has it right. It's all about compromise. In a sense, managing the relationship would be like managing a country the way one is supposed to, with a seperation of religious and secular views. If he is alright with you being an atheist, and you are alright with him being Catholic, there shouldn't be any bumps in the road. But if one or the other thinks that it's a question of "Who's right and who's wrong?" then there will be problems. And having children is another story, as it all comes down to how you both want them to be raised. Will it be a religious or a secular household? It's definately something to talk about, as the most important part of any relationship is honest communication.

Well, I'm an atheist married to a Greek Orthodox gal, no problems there. We go to church as often as she wants, baptised the kids, etc. It means nothing to me, so I'm quite happy to accommodate her beliefs, as long as she doesn't proselytize to me, which she never does. Also, if and when our kids ask us about God, heaven etc, I'm quite happy to maintain the fiction exactly as I'm happy to pretend that father Christmas and the Easter Bunny exist, but once they stop believing in the latter two, or if they ever ask me directly, I will be telling them exactly what I believe. I reckon they'll grow up and out of all of these beliefs, but I have no issues with my kids growing up religious. That is their choice and none of my business.
In the meantime, I am respectful of my wife's beliefs and wishes, just as I expect her to be of mine. No problem at all.

That four marks distinguish Christ's kingdom of heaven on earth. They are made known in the Creed—"I believe in the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church."

One in:

Faith
Belief
Worship
Government

Holy In:

Origin, Christ.
Objective, redemption.
Means, sacraments.
Sanctity of faithful.

Catholic :

Teaches all nations.
During all time.
All Christ taught.
Peoples of all nationalities obedient to one universal authority in faith and morals.

Apostolic :

Founded upon apostles.
Teaches what apostles Apostolic taught.
Continuous existence from time of the apostles.
"The enemies of the Church themselves die and disappear, but the Church itself lives on, and preaches the power of God to ever succeeding generations" (St. Augustine).

Peace Be With You

I am Episcopalian and my partner is Jewish...we find ways to make it work. I have found, respecting the difference in our spiritual path and allowing the other one to practice helps. Also, I try to learn about her religion and likewise, she is respectful of mine. Good luck :)

it's called compromise. what happens if it gets serious enough for children though? will you be okay with them being raised with the belief in god? if not, could you actually tell your bf/husband that his kids won't be allowed to learn his religion?

he's more trouble than its worth.

relationships are hard enough without a mate with a child's mind that believes in sky daddies and boogeymen.

lemme ask you this- is it ok with you that he thinks you are going to burn forever in the flames of hell?

Drop him and find someone who doesn't believe in invisible sky deities.
