why did they torture so much back then? Is it because they were still really in the dark ages?

They didn't know any better. We do now and there are better methods to get information. Peace

My favorite one was strapping a rat in a cage on a person's bare belly and letting the rat chew through the flesh.

Actually, this kind of torture wasn't stemmed until the Pope said it was barbaric and banned it from Catholic/Christian nations.

The people in charge thought that everyone that practiced a different religion was evil and had to be tortured to be purified.

Glad we got past all of that.
