Uniform Resource Locator (URL) formerly known as Universal Resource Locator, is a technical, Web-related term used in two distinct meanings:

* In popular usage and many technical documents, it is a synonym for Uniform Resource Identifier (URI);
* Strictly, the idea of a uniform syntax for global identifiers of network-retrievable documents was the core idea of the World Wide Web. In the early times, these identifiers were variously called "document names", "Web addresses" and "Uniform Resource Locators". These names were misleading, however, because not all identifiers were locators, and even for those that were, this was not their defining characteristic. Nevertheless, by the time the RFC 1630 formally defined the term "URI" as a generic term best suited to the concept, the term "URL" had gained widespread popularity, which has continued to this day.

URL stands for Universal or Uniform Resource Locator. Basically, it is the address of what you are looking for or looking at. If your 8 year old has any computer experience, it will be easy to understand. Just like sending a letter through the mail (snailmail), it has to have an address to go to, same with websites.

It stands for Universal Resource Locater back then, now it stands for Uniform Resource Locator.. It is what you type in the long rectangular box when you go on the internet. When you use the internet, you start out with something already in your url. It is pronounced U-R-L not URL. It is what you put in the address box. It will tell you all about it on wikipedia. To explain it to an eight year old tell him, it is what you type in the box that has nothing it in in the top of the page your on. Here is the exact site from wikipedia.
It is a synonym for URI( Uniform Resource Identifier) which is basically the same thing. A U-R-L is basically used to identify the website you are visiting. The U-R-L of this site is http://answers.yahoo.com/question/;_ylt=Akb8MrGKemXnOEC_0Ocmxppy7hR.;_ylv=3?link=answer&qid=20071126150531AAiBbj4&u=o&update=update&prev_ans_page=1,the URL of google is www.google.com. WWW stands for World Wide Web. EDU stands for education. ORG stands for organization. COM stands for commericial. Glad I coulbe of assistance.

Just say;

URL is the address of a website, just like our house address. You use URL to find a website the same as using our address to find our house.

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator, which is technical name for "website address".

I hope that helps.

Don't forget that children doesn't know anything about technical issues. Explain him/her that URL is like the address of a house, reading from right to left, identifies the domain (like the country), the door number and the way of getting there (http is the protocol, like saying that you have to go by foot, by car or by plane for that address).
Simple example: http://microsoft.pt:
pt - The address is in Portugal
microsoft - the name of the door
http - the way of getting there: Hypertext transfer protocol.

Good luck
