I'm supposed to be writing a paper for my history class, and I wanted to write about something that was very interesting, but isn't well know by a lot of people. I don't want to write about something everyone else is gonna choose(like the civil or revolutionary war). It can't be after 1850, and it has to be north american history. Any suggestions?

I've put together a list of links for you to look at and hope that they help you with ideas, I would suggest airing on the side of caution and would also suggest that you don’t use these essays as your own.

You can talk about the use of mercantilism of the mother country (england) in controlling and benifiting economically from the colonies. It's interesting if you look into it. Here's some topics to look up the definitions of:

The navigation acts (these were just laws established to make anything produced in the colonies to go straight to England on English vessels)

Look up mercantilism and the issues involved in England before colonizing (conflicts between monarchs and parliament, conflicts of religion - protestant and catholic - the glorious revoloution, the enclosure acts, etc.)

This topic has a lot of information but it can get boring. You could try researching Sir Francis Drake. He was a pirate working for Queen Elizabeth, he contributed to destroying Spanish Vessels to give the north american colonies an economic advantage. He also picked up the first settlers from Roanoake before everyone disappeared. That would be a more interesting subject.

I could give you a lot more information if you'd like, just email me!

There are many subjects which would meet you criteria and likely not be of interest to others. For example:

In 1819 Treaty for the cession of Florida by Spain to the United States.

In President James Monroe's 1823 annual message he enunciates the doctrine bearing his name, The Monroe Doctrine.

The 1824 presidential election of John Quincy Adams when for the first time there was no choice from the Electoral College and the House of Representatives made the election.

The Erie Canal was opened in 1825.

1826 saw the abduction of William Morgan which generated lots of anti-masonic excitement.

1827 saw the slavery abolished in the State of New York.

1828 was the beginning of the construction of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Roads.

With the 1829 inauguration of Andrew Jackson as President the 'spoils' system was introduced into American politics.

1830 was the founding of the Church of the Latter-day Saints (Mormans), by Joseph Smith at Manchester, New York.

1831 saw the insurrection of slaves under Nat Turner in Virginia.

During 1832 there was the defeat of the Sacs and Foxes in Black Hawk's war.

A crisis occurred in 1832 with the passage of the Ordinance of Nullification by the State convention of South Carolona.

During 1833 the federal government deposits are removed from the United States Bank by President Jackson.

1834 saw the organization of the Whig Party in the United States and that year also saw the Indian Territory formed by an act of Congress.

1835 saw anti-slavery literature excluded from the United States mails and the passage of the 'Atherton Gag' an act against anti-slavery petitions.

1836 was the Texas Revolution against Mexico which ended with the Republic of Texas.

1837 Chicago was incorporated as a city.

Write something on the pre-Columbian culture of Native Americans. Cahokia culture could be an interesting topic:
