It lets a team get a week of rest and when new teams came and we had to have 16 games in a season, they added the bye week

The point is to allow players to rest for a week. Because other than that bye week, all they pretty much do is practice and play games.

Extends the season by a week (17 instead of 16 weeks) so more tv money and more games to watch because you have fewer games per week and one more week in the season so everyone gets a chance to see more teams. Plus the ability for a team to recover from injuries during the season rather than just plowing through.

TV revenues. It extends the season an additional week without giving the teams an additional game. It's all about the $$$$$$$$$.
