If you are asking this question before pursuing the BA/BS, in a nutshell: time, money, effort (depending on your prior academic preparation and the effectiveness of your study skills). If you haven't already seen "The Tyranny of the Diploma", I suggest you read it (see http://www.forbes.com/forbes/1998/1228/6214104a_print.html)
Should you decide to shoulder the rising costs of a college education, effective time management will be a critical skill. In larger universities, pressure is applied to cut freshmen class size as a winnowing process. At the upper divisions, class space is limited. The culling of the freshman class by various means reduces their numbers to more manageable levels for the junior and senior year classes.
The rising costs of a college education forces many to work and go to school at the same time. If you are married and have children, there is more demand for your time which must be divided between work, home and school. Add in the occasional car repairs, sickness, and various and sundry other trials and tribulations of life and you have all the makings for a disaster waiting to happen. After all, there are only 24 hours in a day.
If you are single, take away the children and domestic chores associated with them, but mix into the roller coaster of emotions with dating and relationships. The result is another challenging balancing act. All of that needing to be done in the limited 24 hours a day.
For many, regardless of the choices they make, differences of opinion take place between family and friends adding still more turmoil to life.
Everyone has to make hard decisions about priorities and sacrifices to get to our desired goals. Nothing goes according to plan. There are always speed bumps on life's highway. Be flexible and adapt or you go crazy. Having a good sense of humor helps, especially if you can laugh at yourself.
Hope this helps. Best wishes.
