The independent quantity of babysitting rests with the per hour rate charged by the sitter--a business person; the dependent quantity comes from the parent(s) who hire the babysitter for her services, where a set of hours (based on that set fee per hour) is agreed upon.

The skating party is much different: the independent quantity rests with the proverbial "more is better", based on admittance fees set per person and / or couple.

"More is better" also carries a dependent quantity based on how many attend the party; the more attending, the more profitable / successful the party becomes.
