It seems like most kickers will take the ball from the referee and push the nose of the ball into the ground. Then flip the ball over and push the other end of the ball into the ground before they place the ball on the tee to kick off. What is the purpose for this?

They are kicking brand new balls. They do that to loosen and soften them up a bit so they are not so stiff. The idea is more compression, the better the kick. It's like a pitcher in baseball getting a new ball after a foul tip into the stands and taking the time to rub it down a little so it is not so slick.

The aerodynamics of the ball can be explained in Scheffler's Aerodynamic Laws.
It can be represented by the equation:
AE+7(AE)
where Ae stands for aeronamicalstructure and 7 represents the anomical structure of the ball.

kicking a brand new ball is going to hurt... by pressing it down on the ground it softens the ball so it wont hurt as bad
