I suffer from the same thing. Simply think of the most boring experience in your life, such as a terrible TV show or another boring experience. Let yourself be immersed in this boredom, and your random thoughts will go away.
Or, you may be having too much sugar or caffeine, also like I did. This gave me too much energy, which meant I would stay awake every night for maybe two hours thinking competely random thoughts before I could sleep. My body was tired, I felt tired, I could tell that I should get some sleep, but I couldn't do it. Either use the above method or watch your sugar/caffeine intake. I suppose it varies from person to person, so it may work only for me, but give it a try anyway, becasue I can remember what it felt like, and it was not good.

I do this too.
It takes a concerted effort to stop thinking along those habitual pathways. It is probably going to be the hardest thing you have ever done. But being aware that you do it is the very first step.
When you begin thinking negative thoughts about yourself, and its the familiar ones you always think, you have to mentally STOP and remind yourself that those neurons, while comfortably familiar, are not ruling your thoughts! Tell yourself to STOP thinking that.
Try to move position. If you were sitting down, get up and take a walk, even if its just inside your house. If you are right in the middle of something around people in public, even just looking in a different direction will help. Hum a tune. Even just thinking of a song will help.
It doesn't always work, on bad days you will still find yourself meandering down those same neuro pathways. This is just a habit.
Also realize that the bad thoughts you are thinking aren't even true. They simply feel true because you've been listening to them for years.
It's about teaching our brains to not go down those neural pathways anymore, and that takes us thinking about different things when the bad/negative thoughts crop up.

in four minutes, you got so many answers that that can only mean that either lots of people share your problems or else feel sympathetic... that alone may be a good start to try to replace your negative thoughts with something more positive
then i think some exercise will be a good way to absorb yourself while helping you feel better by creating lots of "happiness"hormones , which will also help..... yoga which mixes sport with meditation will also help..... in short, if you are obsessive try to get obsessive about something that will be good for you such as sport...

Believe it or not, your problem is spiritual. I can tell you about it because as I'm writing to you, I go through the same problem. Whether you believe in God or not, He is real and is our creator. We are created in His image and likeness and that's why God's arch enemy which is satan, hates our guts. He is after the entire human race to kill, steal and destroy us. he is the one who keeps on throwing those bad thoughts in your head.
Remedy (Not a joke)
Accept Jesus in your heart by confessing him Lord over your life. Then truly, you'll be more equipped to send these thoughts back to where they come from, to the devil. Rebuke satan in the name of Jesus. Cast down those evil thoughts in the name of Jesus, and you shall have peace for sometimes. Until Jesus comes back and send the devil where he belongs, in hell, his harassment against human kind will not cease. However, you will get a brake from him every time he comes and do what I previously told you to do. That's what I've been doing, my friend, and it works!

The best thing is for every negative thought...try to come up with a positive thought to replace it.
Or, get a really upbeat song stuck in your head really deeply so you basically cannot think negative thoughts...

Get some hobbies and get involved in activities you enjoy. It will occupy your time and your attention.
Also, consider exercising consistently. This has less to do with being in shape and more to do with the benefits of a daily period of intense physical activity. For me, when I go to the gym in the morning, this is the one time during the day that is all about ME. Whatever the problems of the day are, I tend to lose those thoughts when I am in the gym. Instead, I find myself focusing on working out, on doing my exercises, and on being better/stronger/faster/etc. than I was during my previous workout. It is very therapeutic for me.

Repeat positive affirmations daily & your mind will start to change. What you think becomes your reality. Refuse to say or associate with negative things. Read "The Secret" and books by Louise Hay, Wayne Dwyer.

With practice.
Every time you get a thought you don't want replace it with one you do want.
It may take time but eventually the negative thoughts will be gone......for the most part.
We all have occasional negative thoughts....that's human nature.

I know how ya feel, having Negative and they are very obsessive thoughts. I've thought of suicide pleanty of times, but yet all I do is I talk to my friends, and family about what is bothering me. They do help from time to time. Try it!

Random thoughts come and go. There's no way to stop them because they just happen "out of the blue". When you get these thoughts divert your attention to something else.
